Another day, a few more Macedonian words learned. "Tuka" is a word that we hear often (some of us more than others) but it means "here." The construction workers are always telling us where to put things around the site and we've finally figured out what they mean! :)
Yesterday was a normal work day, actually it was "green shirt" day. We all decided that it might be a good day to wear our Habitat t-shirts since there had been a nice breeze the day before... it was hot though! They have us filling in the basement of a home with rocky dirt, stretching and bending rebar and tying rebar up on the rooftop.
Lots of hard work... which you might think means, lots of calories burned... not so much! We have discovered that Macedonians LOVE their cheese and bread! Every meal has it and lots of it. This little tradition continued on our winery tour last night at the Popova Kula Winery about 30 minutes outside of Negotino where we are staying. To say the place was beautiful would be an understatement. We went on a tour, enjoyed 5 wines and a huge meal (with bread of course) on a terrace overlooking the mountains and vineyard. So lovely! :)
We worked again today doing the same tasks as above, moving sand this time in the basement which is MUCH easier than the clay/rock combination up until now. A few of us have also mastered the art of bending rebar into rectangles. Now to most of you, this probably sounds easy, it's not! Kosta, the rebar boss, has strict rules when it comes to rebar bending, he's very serious about it! Sherri is the only one to have been told that she is "super" at it... some of us are good, Kosta has "fired" the rest!
Off to Orhid tomorrow after work. Will update again then.
